Indian Railways’ fifth locomotive manufacturing plant in Dahod, Gujarat, is set to begin the production of a 9,000 horsepower electric locomotive.Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed that the prototype is nearing completion, with 30-40 days of work left as it undergoes different levels of testing. He highlighted the plant's advanced features, including a computer-like interior, integrated Kavach and AC systems, and a toilet inside the locomotive, a significant improvement over the older models. The locomotives are set to improve speed on the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor, boosting average speeds from 20-25 km/h to 50-60 km/hr. The factory has a target to produce 1,200 locomotives in the next 11 years, with 85 percent of the workforce being local.Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced the plant in April 2022. In December 2022, Siemens secured a contract for manufacturing and maintaining 1,200 locomotives at the Dahod facility, valued at Rs 26,000 crore. These high-power engines will be used for freight operations, with an estimated capacity of 4,500 tonne at a maximum speed of 75 km/hr.https://www.projectstoday.com/News/Indian-Railways-new-electric-locomotive-plant-in-Gujarat-to-begin-production (ICE MUMBAI)
