ME Elecmetal from Chile to build a grinding media plant in TaldykorganChile-based company ME Elecmetal will build an $85 million grinding media plant in Taldykorgan following an offtake contract signed with KAZ Minerals Group, the latter said in a press release. The new plant will be commissioned in 2028; its production capacity will be 150,000 tonnes of grinding balls per year. Investment in the project will total about $85 million.KAZ Mineral annually needs around 70,000 grinding balls a year, which totals about $100 in value, according to the press release."Grinding balls are essential for the ore processing, accounting for about 10% of the Group’s budget. As Kazakhstan doesn’t produce grinding balls of the required quality, the Group currently has to purchase grinding media from ME Elecmetal, which is an international leader in this area," the press release says.KAZ Minerals is a copper company focused on large scale, low cost, open pit mining in Kazakhstan. It operates the Bozshakol and Aktogay open pit copper mines in the Abay and Pavlodar region of Kazakhstan, three underground mines and associated concentrators in the Abay and East Kazakhstan regions, and the Bozymchak copper-gold mine in Kyrgyzstan.
