Kazakhstan to start construction of 4 new water reservoirs in 2025Construction of four new water reservoirs will begin in Kazakhstan in 2025, Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Nurzhan Nurzhigitov said."In 2025, we plan to begin the construction of four new water reservoirs in three regions of the country, including in Akmola, Kalguty (Zhambyl region), Karaozek (Kyzylorda region) for irrigation of 22,500 hectares of new agricultural areas,” Nurzhigitov said at a Tuesday meeting of the government.The fourth water reservoir called Big Ozen, which will be built in the West Kazakhstan region, will be used to retain flood and melt water and to prevent flooding of two villages with about 5,000 residents in the Kaztal district.The Ministry of Agriculture also plans to upgrade the Ters-Aschybulak and Karakonyz water reservoirs in the Zhambyl region, and the Koskorgan and Koksaray water reservoirs in the Turkestan region.In 2024, the Ministry of Agriculture adopted two strategic documents: a concept of water resources management for 2024-2030 and a comprehensive plan for the water system development for 2024-2028. Following the documents, the republic will build 42 water reservoirs, will upgrade 37 water development works and will improve 14,000 km of irrigation canals, the minister added. (ICE ALMATY)
