US-based engineering firm Parsons has been confirmed as the project management consultant for the Jeddah Central stadium and surrounding villages project. The construction works on the scheme are progressing at full pace after a brief pause and Parsons is working closely with the contracting team to ensure that the project is delivered on time. The main works on the stadium started early last year, when the client, Jeddah Central Development Company (JCDC), awarded an estimated $1.7bn contract to the joint venture of Beijing-headquartered China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC) and local contractor Sama Construction for Trading & Contracting. The construction of the stadium is expected to be completed by 2026. In May last year, the Saudi branch of Shanghai-headquartered Geoharbour Group completed the first phase of the foundation works on the project. The stadium will have a capacity of 46,000 spectators. It will have seven floors above ground and two underground floors, air conditioning and moveable roof systems powered by solar energy. In 2022, JCDC awarded the stadium’s design contract to German architectural firm GMP International. Khatib & Alami won the engineering contract. The stadium is one of the venues for the Saudi 2034 Fifa World Cup. Jeddah Central project JCDC was established in 2019, with Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud chairing its board of directors. It is wholly owned by the Saudi sovereign wealth vehicle, the Public Investment Fund, which also owns the project’s lands. The company secured land for the first phase of Jeddah Central, formerly New Jeddah Downtown, following an agreement with the Royal Saudi Air Defence Forces Institute in March. Jeddah Central is being developed on a 5.7-square-kilometre site and will comprise 17,000 residential units and 2,700 hotel keys, as well as an opera house, a museum, a sports stadium and an oceanarium.
