INDONESIA CONSIDERS PURCHASING AIRCRAFT CARRIER FROM ITALY

Indonesia is considering purchasing the aircraft carrier ITS Giuseppe Garibaldi (C 551) from Italy to enhance its naval capabilities. Launched in 1985, this carrier was placed in reserve after the Italian Navy commissioned the multipurpose Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD) Trieste. The potential deal might include the transfer of AV-8B Harrier II short take-off and vertical landing (STOVL) aircraft, which would significantly boost Indonesia's naval power and support various military operations, including humanitarian assistance and naval security. Indonesia's modernization strategy requires a minimum essential force that includes at least four helicopter-carrying vessels, four frigates, and several missile patrol boats. The acquisition of ITS Giuseppe Garibaldi would make it the largest warship in Indonesia's fleet, reflecting the nation's efforts to strengthen its naval capabilities amid growing concerns over China's presence in the South China Sea. This strategic move is part of a broader plan to enhance Indonesia's defense and operational readiness. In addition to the potential aircraft carrier purchase, Indonesia has been actively acquiring other naval assets. In March 2024, Fincantieri signed a $1.23 billion contract with Indonesia's Ministry of Defense for two patrol ships, Pattugliatore Polivalente d’Altura. Indonesia has also bought KCR missile boats from Turkey and plans to procure patrol ships from Japan. These acquisitions are aimed at bolstering Indonesia's naval strength and ensuring regional stability.Source: https://news24online.com/world/indonesia-to-buy-aircraft-carrier-fromamid-growing-south-china-sea-tensions-italy/497795/ (ICE GIACARTA)
