MOZAMBIQUE: JAPAN DONATES €10M TO BOLSTER SECURITY IN CABO DELGADO

According to a statement issued by the Japanese Embassy, the project aims to "rehabilitate and build new police posts and reinforce the infrastructure of border posts".The Japanese government previously announced that five police stations would be rehabilitated, 13 new ones would be built, and a border post would be built in Cabo Delgado as part of the project.According to the document, the money, given to the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), which will use it, will also enable the province's police and migration forces to be trained."To strengthen the capacity to fight crime, including in border areas, and improve the relationship between the police and local communities in Cabo Delgado," it added.Gas-rich Cabo Delgado has been facing an armed rebellion since October 2017, which has caused thousands of deaths and a humanitarian crisis, with more than a million people displaced. In 2024 alone, at least 349 people died in attacks by Islamic extremist groups in the province, an increase of 36% on the previous year, according to data recently released by the Africa Center for Strategic Studies (ACSS), an academic institution of the US Department of Defence that analyses conflicts in Africa. The last major attack took place on 10 and 11 May 2024 on the district headquarters of Macomia, with around a hundred insurgents sacking the town, causing several deaths and heavy fighting with the Mozambican Defence and Security Forces and Rwandan soldiers, who are supporting Mozambique in the fight against the rebels.
