AMAZON KUIPER TO INVEST IN INDONESIA, CHALLENGING STARLINK IN SATELLITE INTERNET
Amazon Kuiper plans to invest US$20 million to build six gateway stations in Indonesia, aiming to compete with Starlink by providing low earth orbit (LEO) satellite services. These satellites, orbiting at altitudes of 500 to 1,200 kilometers, offer low-latency communications, imaging, and scientific applications. The investment is expected to increase to US$90 million by 2035, with Amazon Kuiper seeking operational permits and telecommunications licenses to expand infrastructure and improve internet access in various regions. Gonzalo de Dios, Global Head of Licensing and International Regulatory Affairs for Amazon Project Kuiper, emphasized the importance of connectivity in remote areas and expressed the company's commitment to working with the government and local partners to enhance internet access across Indonesia. The project aims to bridge the digital divide and support the development of the national digital ecosystem, benefiting sectors such as MSMEs, e-government, e-health, and e-education. Minister of Communication and Digital Application, Meutya V. Hafid, highlighted the role of satellite technology in overcoming connectivity challenges in remote areas. She stressed the importance of ensuring equal access to digital technology for all citizens and the potential for private sector investment and innovation to accelerate digital transformation. The Ministry will continue to facilitate the licensing process and necessary discussions to ensure the successful implementation of the Amazon Kuiper project.Source: https://indonesiabusinesspost.com/3958/energy-and-resources/amazon-kuiper-to-invest-in-indonesia-challenging-starlink-in-satellite-internet (ICE GIACARTA)
