MALAYSIA TO STRENGTHEN TRADE IN THE INDONESIA-MALAYSIA-THAILAND GROWTH TRIANGLE (IMT-GT)

The government is committed to strengthening trade and investment facilitation in the Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle (IMT-GT) sub-region as it assumes the ASEAN chairmanship in 2025, said the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (Miti). As Malaysia’s lead agency in the Working Group on Trade and Investment Facilitation (WGTI), Miti will focus on enhancing IMT-GT competitiveness by emphasizing key areas, including facilitating trade and investment through the reduction of non-tariff barriers. In addition, the ministry aims to accelerate the economic integration in the sub-region by developing comprehensive trade, investment, and tourism databases. "Malaysia remains committed to leveraging its role as Asean chair 2025 to spearhead initiatives that drive IMT-GT economic growth, in line with regional development goals and global competitiveness," Miti said in a written response uploaded to the Dewan Negara portal on Tuesday. Miti was responding to Senator Baharuddin Ahmad’s question on Malaysia’s efforts as Asean chair to stimulate economic and industrial growth in the IMT-GT sub-region. The ministry added that under this year's Asean chairmanship, the WGTI platform will be used to strengthen synergies between WGTI and Asean trade and investment forums, expand private sector and international investor participation, and enhance the IMT-GT supply chain and value competitiveness.
