INDONESIA TO BECOME CENTER FOR PETROCHEMICAL INDUSTRY DEVELOPMENT
ExxonMobil Cepu Limited (EMCL) is collaborating with the Indonesian government to explore the potential of making Indonesia a hub for the petrochemical industry in Asia. EMCL's VP of Public & Government Affairs, Dave A. Seta, highlighted the goal of positioning Indonesia as a key player in the region's petrochemical development, with expectations that Asia will become the center of growth for the polymer industry over the next 20 to 30 years. This initiative was emphasized during a media briefing in Jakarta. In January 2025, ExxonMobil announced its commitment to developing a petrochemical industry and carbon capture storage (CCS) in Indonesia, with an initial investment of US$10 billion (approximately IDR163.2 trillion). Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, stated that the signing of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signifies a joint commitment to fostering inclusive, competitive, and sustainable economic development. The project is expected to have a significant impact on Indonesia's progress across various sectors. The initial investment will focus on developing a petrochemical industry centered on plastics and synthetic fibers. Additionally, ExxonMobil has pledged $5 billion towards building a carbon warehouse or CCS. The government and ExxonMobil are currently evaluating potential locations for the project, with options including Sunda Asri or areas between the Sunda Strait and the Java Sea.Source: https://ekonomi.bisnis.com/read/20250320/44/1863418/exxonmobil-targetkan-ri-jadi-pusat-pengembangan-industri-petrokimia (ICE GIACARTA)
