KAZAKHSTAN-CONCEPT-WASTE-RECYCLING

Kazakhstan to develop waste management concept by September 2025Kazakhstan’s Prime Minister, Olzhas Bektenov, has tasked the Ministry of Ecology, in collaboration with relevant state agencies, to develop a comprehensive waste management concept by September 1, 2025."The concept will focus on centralizing waste management processes, engaging all stakeholders, and promoting a circular economy model," he said at a government meeting in Astsna.Bektenov emphasized the need for active work on project implementation, equipment modernization, and the introduction of new technologies. He noted that while a special financing mechanism was established last year, only 6 out of 67 approved projects have been financed, with a total of 4 billion tenge allocated. Currently, about 26% of the nearly 5 million tonnes of solid waste generated in regions is processed and recycled, primarily from paper and plastic waste. The Prime Minister also highlighted the low rate of industrial waste recycling in Kazakhstan, with only 11% of the 1 billion tonnes of waste generated annually being processed. This figure contrasts with the 70-80% recycling rate in developed countries. To address these challenges, Bektenov directed the Ministry of Ecology, the Industrial Fund, and regional akimats to accelerate waste management project implementation. He set a target to increase the number of financed projects from the approved list by at least five times within three months. Additionally, the ministry, together with regional authorities, is tasked with identifying waste-to-energy projects, with an auction for potential investors planned for April. (ICE ALMATY)
