ETHIOPIA: GASOLINE PRICE RISES BY 11%

The Petroleum and Energy Authority has implemented a fuel price adjustment, raising fuel prices by approximately 11%. This increase has been effective from March 23, 2025. The Director General of the Authority, Ms. Seharla Abdullahi, confirmed the price hike and explained that the adjustment was necessary to address market realities and reduce the financial burden of subsidies. As a result of the increase, the price of one liter of gasoline has risen from Birr 101.47 to Birr 112.67, marking an 11.04% increase. White diesel and kerosene have both seen price jumps from Birr 98.98 Birr to Birr 107.93 per liter, reflecting a 9.04% increase. Jet fuel prices, which have been guided by global market pricing since the past three months, climbed from Birr 109.56 Birr to Birr 113.20 per liter, a smaller increase of 3.32%. Heavy black diesel and light black diesel prices have been pegged at Birr 106.75 and Birr 109.22 per liter, respectively. The new prices come as part of a gradual subsidy reform process. While gasoline, kerosene, and white diesel remain under a partial subsidy system, prices for light diesel and heavy black diesel have been determined by market forces since last year.
