ETHIOPIA EXPANDS CAPITAL MARKET WITH LICENSING OF NEW SERVICE PROVIDERS
The Ethiopian Capital Market Authority (ECMA) has granted licenses to five new capital market service providers (CMSPs). This development increases the number of licensed CMSPs from four to nine and introducing the country’s first-ever investment banks.The newly licensed entities include CBE Capital S.C. and Wegagen Capital Investment Bank S.C., which will operate as investment banks. Ethio-Fidelity Securities S.C. has been licensed as a securities dealer, while HST Investment Advisory Services PLC and Equation Securities Investment Advisor PLC will offer securities investment advisory services. These new additions aim to diversify and deepen the Ethiopian capital market by providing crucial services ranging from investment banking and advisory to securities brokerage and dealing.Before this expansion, Ethiopia’s capital market was served by only four licensed providers, all operating solely as investment advisers. The introduction of investment banks and securities dealers is expected to improve the market’s liquidity and efficiency, enhance capital-raising opportunities, and attract both local and international investors.Speaking at the licensing ceremony, ECMA Director General Dr. Alebachew Nigussie congratulated the new licensees and emphasized their responsibility in shaping the future of Ethiopia’s capital market.
