EU AND FRANCE COLLABORATE TO ENHANCE SAFETY AT INDONESIA’S BUSIEST PORTS
The European Union and France are collaborating to enhance safety at Indonesia’s busiest ports through the Global Ports Safety project. Expertise France, a French agency for international technical cooperation, signed a letter of intent with the EU in Jakarta during French Foreign Affairs Minister Jean-Noël Barrot’s visit. The initiative, covering 12 ports in South and Southeast Asia, will focus on improving security, sustainability, and resilience at Jakarta’s Tanjung Priok Port and Surabaya’s Tanjung Perak Port. The project, with a budget of 8.5 million euros over four years, is jointly funded by the EU (6 million euros) and France (2.5 million euros). The funds will be allocated to capacity-building activities, risk prevention, incident management, expert consultations, and equipment procurement. Although the specific amount allocated to Indonesian ports was not disclosed, the selection of these locations is based on their strategic importance and high traffic volume. Indonesia-EU trade reached US$30.8 billion in 2023, with Indonesia maintaining a US$2.5 billion surplus. As Indonesia negotiates a free trade agreement with the EU, an expected increase in trade will further boost port activity. According to Lloyd's List, Tanjung Priok ranks as the 26th busiest port globally, handling 7.3 million TEU in 2023, while Tanjung Perak ranks 49th with 4.1 million TEU, both showing year-on-year growth.Source: https://jakartaglobe.id/business/france-eu-partner-to-make-indonesias-busiest-ports-safer (ICE GIACARTA)
