Kazakhstan boosts coal transit via Russia by nearly 50% in Q1Kazakhstan transported over 2.3 million tonnes of coal through Russia in the 1st quarter of 2025, according to a statement from Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (KTZ), the national railway operator."In the 1st quarter, more than 2.3 million tonnes of Kazakh coal was transported through Russia, marking a 44.5% increase compared to the same period in 2024. The bulk of export coal was handled through Russian ports: 1.3 million tonnes via Baltic ports and 900,000 tonnes via the Azov-Black Sea ports (a fivefold increase year-on-year)," KTZ reported following the 15th meeting of the joint working group on strategic cooperation with Russian Railways (RZD).The parties agreed during the talks to boost shipments of Kazakh coal to Russian ports.Additionally, container traffic along the eastern route of the North-South transport corridor surged by 63% in Q1, exceeding 1,000 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units)."During the marketing period (September 2024 to April 2025), over 650,000 tonnes of grain was shipped to Russian and Baltic ports. Container shipments on the China-Russia-China route rose by 30% in January-March, reaching over 132,000 TEUs," KTZ said.The meeting also approved an action plan for key areas of strategic cooperation between KTZ and RZD for 2025–2027.The next meeting of the joint working group will be held in Russia in the 2nd half of 2025.Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (KTZ) is a transport, warehousing and distribution company, which is part of Kazakhstan’s National Wealth Fund Samruk-Kazyna.
