AUB MEDITERRANEO RECEIVES €100K GRANT FOR INTELLIGENT ROBOTICS RESEARCH
The American University of Beirut – Mediterraneo (AUB Mediterraneo) in Paphos has secured a prestigious €100,000 research grant from the island’s Research and Innovation Foundation, to support a pioneering project in intelligent robotics. The two-year funding, awarded under the VISION ERC call, will enable the establishment of the Intelligent Robotics Research Lab in Paphos, and launch a new line of research in intelligent robotics, artificial intelligence, and human-robot interaction. The project, titled: “Human-Guided Robotic Manipulation for Warehouse Automation with Augmented Reality”, is led by Dr. Rafael Papallas, Assistant Professor of Computer Science at AUB Mediterraneo and principal investigator of the grant. The aim of the research is to address labour shortages in warehouse operations through semi-autonomous robots and augmented reality interfaces. “This grant not only launches a new line of research in Cyprus, but also supports the development of technologies that align with Europe’s strategic priorities to tackle key global challenges, enhance its competitiveness, and strengthen its economic resilience,” said Papallas. As principal investigator, Papallas will lead the project, which also includes the recruitment of a postdoctoral researcher to work directly on the project. The funding will also support Papallas in submitting a compelling research proposal to the ERC Starting Grant, one of the most prestigious research funding opportunities in Europe. “We are proud to support cutting-edge research that addresses global challenges while creating new opportunities in Cyprus,” said Dr Wassim El Hajj, rector of AUB Mediterraneo. The initiative further solidifies AUB Mediterraneo’s role as a regional centre of excellence in science and innovation. (ICE BEIRUT)
