INFLATION HITS OVER 5-YEAR LOW
LOWER prices of key items and transportation costs pulled inflation to an over five-year low of 1.4 percent in April, the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) reported on Tuesday. Consumer price growth slowed from 1.8 percent in the previous month and 3.8 percent a year earlier — the slowest pace since November 2019's 1.2 percent. The result was also lower than the 1.8 percent median forecast in a Manila Times' poll of economists, but fell within the 1.3- to 2.1-percent estimate of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) for the month. "The downtrend in the overall inflation in April 2025 was primarily brought about by the slower annual increase in the index of food and non-alcoholic beverages at 0.9 percent in April 2025 from 2.2 percent in the previous month," the PSA said in a statement. Also contributing was a "faster year-on-year decrease in the transport index at 2.1 percent during the month from a 1.1 percent annual drop in March 2025," it added. https://www.manilatimes.net/2025/05/07/business/top-business/inflation-hits-over-5-year-low/2106263 (ICE SINGAPORE)
