TAIWAN INFLATION DROPS TO 2.03% IN APRIL Eating out records highest increase in 13 months
TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The consumer price index fell to 2.03% in April, compared to 2.32% in March, the government said Wednesday. If the prices for vegetables, fruit, and energy were left out, inflation in April stood at 1.66%, according to the Directorate General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics. The figure marked 13 months in a row of the rate staying below 2%.Despite the overall stable figures, the cost of eating out rose 3.48%, or more than 3% for the sixth month running – and the most rapid pace in 13 months, per CNA.Positive elements, according to the government, were the absence of a rate increase for electricity and a decline in international oil prices. Compared to April 2024, fuel prices fell 3.74%. While rent rose 2.4% from April last year, the increase was the smallest of the past 12 months, per government data.International elements, including US tariffs and the depreciation of the US dollar, are unlikely to have a significant impact on prices in Taiwan in the short term, officials said. A strengthening Taiwan dollar would only translate into lower consumer prices after one or two quarters.May. 7, 2025 20:17Matthew StrongTaiwan News, Staff Writer (ICE TAIPEI)
