JORDAN IMPORTS 76% OF ITS ENERGY AT A COST OF 8% OF GDP
Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Saleh Kharabsheh, inaugurated the “Innovative Energy Solutions” conference on Thursday, held at the German Jordanian University on May 8–9. In his opening remarks, Minister Kharabsheh stressed the importance of strengthening local, regional, and international cooperation to enhance the use and efficiency of renewable energy. He underscored the need to secure attractive financing mechanisms to stimulate investment in the sector. He also highlighted the critical role of research and development, along with the exchange of expertise, in reducing the costs of renewable energy technologies and driving innovation. Kharabsheh noted that energy remains a pivotal issue for Jordan's sustainable development, especially in light of the Kingdom’s heavy reliance on energy imports. Jordan currently imports 76% of its energy needs, with the associated costs consuming 8% of the national GDP due to rising global oil prices. (ICE AMMAN)
