Over 6,000 km of irrigation canals to be modernized in Kazakhstan in 2025Nearly 1,000 km of water canals will be put into operation in 2025, Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Nurzhan Nurzhigitov said."This year, we are to modernize over 6,000 km of canals using monies from the government budget and borrowings from international financial institutions, including the World Bank, Islamic Development Bank and the European Bank. In 2025 we plan to commission 962 km of canals, covering an irrigated area of around 200,000 hectares," Nurzhigitov said during the “government hour” meeting in the Majilis, the lower house of the parliament.In 2021-2024, as many as 884 out of the 8,577 canals, totaling more than 5,400 km in length, were repaired and upgraded. This includes 162 canals or 778.3 km overhauled and modernized in 2024 alone. (ICE ALMATY)
