INDONESIA PLANS TO RESTRICT IMPORT OF CASSAVA & TAPIOCA TO PROTECT LOCAL FARMERS
Indonesia is considering restrictions on the import of cassava and tapioca to protect local farmers from foreign competition. The move, which is being discussed within the Trade Ministry, follows concerns from agricultural stakeholders about the negative impact of imported cassava on domestic prices. The ministry has already engaged in internal discussions and plans to raise the issue with the Economic Affairs Ministry, though the final decision will depend on the global economic situation stabilizing. Local authorities in cassava-producing regions like Lampung have set reference prices to support farmers, who have been affected by rising imports. Imports of cassava to Indonesia surged by 609.11% from January to November 2024, with Vietnam being the primary supplier. Indonesia's Agriculture Minister, Andi Amran Sulaiman, criticized the local cassava processing industry for over-relying on imported raw materials, which he believes harms local producers. This has led to calls for measures to curb imports, stabilize prices, and protect the livelihoods of Indonesian farmers, especially in light of the growing influx of imported cassava.Source: https://jakartaglobe.id/business/indonesia-plans-to-restrict-import-of-cassava-tapioca-to-protect-local-farmers (ICE GIACARTA)
