ENI STARTS GAS PRODUCTION FROM MERAKES EAST FIELD OFFSHORE EAST KALIMANTAN
Italian oil and gas company Eni has commenced gas production from the Merakes East Field in the Kutai Basin, offshore East Kalimantan. As part of the East Sepinggan Block, where Eni holds an 85% stake, the field is expected to contribute up to 100 million standard cubic feet per day (MMscfd) or 18,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boepd). Located in 1,600 meters of water, about 10 km east of the original Merakes Field, Merakes East is connected via subsea infrastructure to the Jangkrik Floating Production Unit (FPU), with gas transported through pipelines to supply the domestic market and the Bontang LNG Plant. The project progressed rapidly, beginning production just two years after its final investment decision (FID), and marks a key step in Eni’s strategy to harness Indonesia's rich gas reserves. This milestone complements Eni’s broader activities in the Kutai Basin, where it has emerged as a major player through exploration, acquisitions, and collaborations with SKK Migas. The company is also developing the Maha Field and has secured approval for Northern Hub and Gendalo-Gendang fields, aiming to optimize local content and enhance capacity at Bontang LNG. Eni’s presence in Indonesia includes a broad portfolio of upstream assets, and production from East Kalimantan has already reached 700 MMscfd. With future targets of up to 2 Bcfd of gas and 90,000 barrels per day of condensate, Eni is also forming a joint venture with Petronas to manage regional assets and potentially become a dominant LNG supplier in Southeast Asia, with combined reserves of 3 billion boe and 10 billion boe in exploration potential.Source: https://ekonomi.bisnis.com/read/20250514/44/1876675/eni-mulai-produksi-gas-dari-lapangan-merakes-east-di-lepas-pantai-kaltim (ICE GIACARTA)
