SAFARICOM ETHIOPIA REPORTS A 270% REVENUE GROWTH

Safaricom Ethiopia has reported a 270% increase in annual revenue, reaching Birr 7.2 billionfor the fiscal year ending March 31, 2025, up from Birr 2.7 billion the previous year. Despite the revenue growth, the company remains in its investment phase, recording an operating expense of Birr 47 billion.In a statement shared with Sheger, the telecom giant attributed the high operational costs to ongoing infrastructure expansion and market penetration efforts. The company also noted challenges linked to foreign exchange rate fluctuations.Safaricom Ethiopia has now covered 50% of the country with 4G services, establishing 3,141 network sites. This network expansion has supported 8.8 million active voice and internet users, an increase of 103% from last year. Among them, 7.1 million are active internet users, with data consumption rising to an average of 6.5 GB per user per month, up 53%.The mobile money platform M-PESA has also gained traction, reaching 2.4 million users and facilitating digital transactions worth Birr 15.8 billion. Services include international remittances and airtime purchases via banking integration.Beyond business, Safaricom has invested Birr 100 million in community initiatives, supporting education, healthcare, and agriculture. Contributions include laptops and routers for schools, six months of free internet access, and aid to disaster-hit communities. The company also donated Birr 10 million toward rebuilding the Jigjiga sand market and supporting displaced families.“Through strong investment and strategic leadership, we have grown our customer base and expanded services across Ethiopia,” said CEO Wim Vanhelleputte, reflecting on the company’s achievements over the past year.
