UZBEKISTAN-HYDROGEN-PRODUCTION
Uzbekistan may begin green hydrogen production in June - Energy MinistryUzbekistan is preparing to begin production of green hydrogen, Energy Minister Jurabek Mirzamakhmudov said."We hope that we will be able to demonstrate the results of the hydrogen production project and officially announce it during the Tashkent International Investment Forum [scheduled for June]," Mirzamakhmudov said while speaking at a plenary session of the Uzbekistan Energy Week UEW-2025 that opened in Tashkent on Tuesday.Currently, only five countries worldwide are engaged in green hydrogen production, Mirzamakhmudov said. "Uzbekistan is expanding the hydrogen club to six members who have mastered one of the environmentally friendly fuels," he said.Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev participated in the ground-breaking ceremony for green hydrogen production in Chirchik in the Tashkent region in November 2023. The $88 million project envisions initial production of 3,000 tonnes of hydrogen annually with subsequent processing into mineral fertilizers. The second phase includes production of up to 500,000 tonnes of ammonia per year from green hydrogen, along with the creation of a wind farm park with a capacity of up to 2.4 GW.It was previously reported that in 2021 the Uzbek Energy Ministry signed agreements with Saudi Arabia's ACWA Power and U.S.-based Air Products to develop hydrogen energy in the country. In August 2022, the parties concluded another agreement, on industrial production of green hydrogen. The complex will operate at the ammonia plant in Chirchik. The company will also establish environmentally friendly ammonia production that according to estimates will save 600 million cubic meters of gas annually and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 1.5 million tonnes.
