VIỆT NAM’S FINANCIAL FIRMS HEAT UP WITH NEW WAVE OF M&A ACTIVITY

A new wave of mergers and acquisitions is reshaping Việt Nam’s financial sector in 2025, driven by commercial banks and securities firms aiming to expand into investment banking and asset management. This trend has intensified during the annual general meeting season. Sacombank plans to invest up to VNĐ1.5 trillion ($57.8 million) to acquire a controlling stake in a reputable securities firm, explicitly excluding SBS Securities JSC from consideration. Similarly, MSB has gained shareholder approval to acquire a securities or fund management company with charter capital between VNĐ300–500 billion, intending to inject further capital post-acquisition. SeABank is reviving its paused plan to acquire 100% of Asean Securities Corporation, citing improved market conditions. Other players like DNSE Securities and Thành Công Securities are also restructuring and expanding their financial services ecosystems. The push reflects banks' strategies to enhance competitiveness and capitalize on Việt Nam’s anticipated upgrade to emerging market status, which could draw $25 billion in annual foreign investment. As wealth management is projected to reach $600 billion by 2027, banks aim to build full-service financial ecosystems, integrating securities, mutual funds, and insurance products.
