FIRST 6G GLOBAL SUMMIT IN ASIA-PACIFIC SUCCESSFULLY CONCLUDED WITH FRUITFUL Outcomes
First 6G Global Summit in Asia-Pacific Successfully Concluded with Fruitful Outcomes Creating a favorable environment for the 6G era In his keynote speech at the Summit, Mr. Algernon Yau, Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, pointed out that Hong Kong is well acclaimed to be at the forefront of 6G development. “Our city’s telecommunications market is one of the most advanced and dynamic in the world, with a proven track record of embracing innovation and driving connectivity,” he said. Mr. Yau stressed that the Government is fully committed to fostering a conductive environment that drives technological advancement and prepares Hong Kong for the 6G era. These include releasing suitable spectrum through auctions to support the development of advanced mobile communication services, exploring further facilitation measures from telecommunications perspectives to support the development of the low-altitude economy, and streamlining the licensing procedures of Low Earth Orbit satellites to enhance Hong Kong’s competitiveness in satellite development. Finalizing 6G standards in 2029 and commercial use in 2030 Meanwhile, Mr. Chaucer Leung, Director-General of Communications, said that the first set of technical standards for 6G is expected to be finalized in 2029 so that commercial service can be introduced in 2030. The Summit offered prime opportunities for industry experts of the world to explore various key topics of 6G, preparing for the arrival of the 6G era. Hong Kong as a bridge between Mainland China and the world Delivering his keynote speech in the afternoon session of the first-day Summit, Mr. Jenkin Suen, Chairman of the Communications Authority, outlined Hong Kong’s unique role as the gateway between Mainland China and the rest of the world. “Being a telecommunications hub in the Asia-Pacific region and a gateway to Mainland China, Hong Kong is an ideal place for exploring, developing and deploying the new generation of mobile technology.” Mr. Suen said. 6G Global Summit Agenda Entering its fourth edition, the Summit was first held as a virtual conference in 2022 by Forum Global, and was held in Bahrain in 2023 and the United Kingdom in 2024. The Summit was held in Hong Kong on 8 and 9 May 2025, focusing on key issues that shape 6G development, including standardization, technological innovations, sustainability and potential applications, as well as the strategic role of the Asia-Pacific region and the opportunities presented by a more connected and intelligent global network. The Summit also explored opportunities brought by a more closely connected and smarter global network.
