ETHIOPIA RELAUNCHES $445M PLAN FOR SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA’S TALLEST TOWER
Ethiopia has relaunched its ambitious plan to construct a 62-storey headquarters for Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) in Addis Ababa—a project initially announced in 2023 but stalled due to financial and logistical challenges. The 445 million US dollars skyscraper is set to become the tallest building in sub-Saharan Africa.Located near Mexico Square in the capital's Kirkos district, the tower will span 197,800 square meters and rise to 327.5 meters, surpassing the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia's 209-meter headquarters.EEP is now seeking construction firms with strong financial standing and proven technical expertise to undertake the development of its 62-storey high-rise headquarters in the heart of Addis Ababa's Financial District.EEP has officially reopened the bidding process for its long-awaited headquarters project, inviting qualified international and local contractors to apply. The relaunched project will be built on a 20,792-square-meter plot, with a total built-up area of 197,800 square meters. The design includes three basement levels for parking and MEP (mechanical, electrical, and plumbing) systems; a podium featuring commercial spaces and an EEP office lobby; 55 floors of office space and sky gardens; and two top floors hosting a sky garden, technical rooms, and a rooftop restaurant.EEP has engaged the international consulting firm Dar Al-Handasah (Shair & Partners) as the design and construction supervision consultant. To qualify, contractors must demonstrate at least 10 years of experience in large-scale construction projects since January 2015 and have completed at least three contracts valued at a minimum of 370 million US dollars each over the last decade. In addition, applicants must show an average annual turnover of at least 230 million US dollars over the past five years. (ICE ADDIS ABEBA)
