First production phase of Butadiene Project to begin July 1, 2025The first production phase of the Kazakh-Russian Butadiene Project is set to start in July 2025, the Kazakh government’s press service announced. The project was discussed during a meeting between Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov and Nail Maganov, CEO of Russia’s Tatneft."We are actively working with the contractor, which is China Tianchen Engineering Corporation. The project aims to annually produce 60,000 tonnes of divinyl styrene synthetic rubber (DSSR) for use in the rubber and tire industry, 40,000 tonnes of styrene-butadiene-styrene rubber (SBS) for road surfaces and plastics, and 40,000 tonnes of methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) as high-octane gasoline. The first production is expected to begin on July 1 this year," the press service said in a Wednesday statement. The parties also discussed geological exploration, together with National Company KazMunayGas, at the Karaton Podsolevoy block, as well as projects for the production of terephthalic acid (PTA) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET).President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said in November 2023 that Butadiene LLP, a joint venture of Russia’s Tatneft and Kazakhstan’s Sovereign Wealth Fund Samruk-Kazyna, had started the construction of a petrochemical plant.Kazakh Deputy Energy Minister Askhat Khasenov told earlier Interfax that the first phase of the project will be taken to commercial operation by the end of 2025 and the second by the end of 2026. Investment in the project is estimated at $1 billion. The US incorporated Lummus Technology acts as a licensor of the petrochemical plant, which will include the rights for the technology and the basic engineering for the four production units to be located at the plant. The new facility will produce 85,000 tonnes of isobutylene, 120,000 tonnes of butadiene and 40,000 tonnes of methyl tertiary-butyl ether. The feedstock for the production process will be supplied from the Tengiz and Korolev oil fields in the Atyrau region of Kazakhstan. The both phases will produce about 100,000 tonnes of rubber a year. The rubber will be supplied to the tire plant of KamaTyresKz LLP, which is a joint venture between Tatneft PJSC and the Kazakhstan-based company Allur, according to Khasenov. The tire plant is located in the town of Saran in the Karaganda region, central Kazakhstan. (ICE ALMATY)
