HCM CITY PLANS TO CONVERT RIDE-HAILING MOTORCYCLES TO ELECTRIC VEHICLES
HCM City plans to convert approximately 400,000 motorcycles used by ride-hailing drivers to electric vehicles, according to the city’s People’s Committee. A comprehensive plan for the green transition will be proposed in June, with a detailed implementation roadmap expected by July. The city has begun identifying locations for charging stations and rest stops for technology-based drivers. Platforms like Grab, Be, and ShopeeFood operate extensively in HCM City, though only Xanh SM currently mandates electric motorcycles. In parallel, a broader vehicle emission control project is being drafted, aiming to encourage electric vehicle adoption across taxis, government vehicles, and commercial fleets. It also envisions restrictions on fossil fuel vehicles in the city centre and Cần Giờ by 2030. Business leaders have called for incentives and infrastructure development to support the transition. Chairman Nguyễn Văn Được affirmed the city’s commitment to sustainable development through electric mobility and will establish a steering committee to oversee the initiative. (ICE HO CHI MINH CITY)
