China's CRRC to supply 100 locomotives to Kazakhstan in two-year dealChinese rolling stock manufacturer CRRC Ziyang will supply Kazakhstan’s national railway operator, Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (KTZ), with 62 shunting locomotives in 2025, followed by an additional 38 in 2026, KTZ’s press service announced."The delivery is part of a framework agreement signed between KTZ and CRRC in October 2023 for the supply of 100 shunting and 100 mainline locomotives. The deal also includes the establishment of engineering and maintenance centers in Kazakhstan to support the new fleet," the statement reads.The CKD6s locomotives will be deployed in the Karaganda and Pavlodar divisions, as well as at the Astana locomotive depot. Service centers for maintenance will be opened in Pavlodar and Karaganda.Over the past two decades, KTZ has purchased around 300 passenger and mainline locomotives from CRRC, along with more than 6,000 Chinese-made freight cars.CRRC, the world’s largest rail equipment manufacturer, holds approximately 50% of the global locomotive market.KTZ, a state-controlled transport and logistics company, manages Kazakhstan’s railway, seaport, and airport infrastructure, as well as logistics hubs. The latest acquisitions are part of KTZ’s broader fleet modernization plan, which includes investments in energy-efficient and hybrid locomotives. (ICE ALMATY)
