VIETNAM TO EXPORT RENEWABLE ENERGY TO MALAYSIA, SINGAPORE VIA SUBMARINE CABLES

Vietnam, Malaysia, and Singapore have signed a trilateral agreement to develop cross-border renewable energy infrastructure, marking a major step toward realizing the ASEAN Power Grid vision. The agreement, witnessed by Prime Ministers Phạm Minh Chính, Anwar Ibrahim, and Lawrence Wong during the 46th ASEAN Summit, aims to export clean electricity from Vietnam—especially from offshore wind power—to Malaysia and Singapore via submarine cables. Key stakeholders include Vietnam’s PTSC, Malaysia’s TNB and Petronas, and Singapore’s Sembcorp Utilities. The project will assess feasibility, grid connectivity, and the need for supporting storage systems to ensure energy stability. This pioneering initiative positions Vietnam as a regional renewable energy hub and a driver of green economic growth and carbon reduction. It also offers a scalable model for clean energy cooperation in Southeast Asia and strengthens ASEAN’s energy security and sustainability goals through cross-border collaboration.
