INDONESIA EYES EU TRADE BREAKTHROUGH AS BLOC SOFTENS GREEN BUSINESS RULES
Indonesia is close to finalizing its long-delayed free trade deal with the European Union (I-EU CEPA), following the EU's decision to classify the country as “standard-risk” under its deforestation regulation. This move, welcomed by Indonesian officials and businesses, is expected to boost exports of palm oil, coffee, and cacao by easing compliance burdens. Trade Minister Budi Santoso noted that the softened EU stance aligns with the final phase of trade talks, with hopes to conclude the agreement by mid-year. While exporters are relieved to avoid the stricter checks applied to high-risk countries, many still aim for a “low-risk” label to reduce costs further, especially for small producers. The EU also clarified that due diligence won’t be needed for every shipment between verified partners, easing the load. However, experts caution that the current regulatory flexibility may be temporary, urging Indonesia to strengthen sustainability efforts while there’s still momentum.Source: https://www.thejakartapost.com/business/2025/05/27/indonesia-eyes-eu-trade-breakthrough-as-bloc-softens-green-business-rules.html (ICE GIACARTA)
