KAZAKHSTAN-U.S.-TRADE-TARIFFS
Tokayev: We do not dramatize situation with U.S. tariffsKazakhstan does not overreact to recent U.S. tariff increases and views the matter as a topic for further negotiations, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev told Al Jazeera in an interview Thursday."Unfortunately, recently the U.S. administration put high tariffs on our exports, but we are not dramatizing this trend, and I believe this is a matter for further negotiations," Tokayev said. The Kazakh leader emphasized that attracting U.S. investment remains his country's primary focus.Bilateral trade between Kazakhstan and the United States reached $4 billion in 2024, according to Tokayev."Our trade volume [with the U.S.] is not that big - only $4 billion, but at the same time we export uranium, oil and chrome to the American market. I think that it is a strategic partnership, strategic trade between both Kazakhstan and the United States," Tokayev said.Tokayev earlier welcomed U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to impose a 90-day moratorium on tariff hikes. On April 9, Trump suspended planned tariff increases for 90 days on imports from more than 75 countries that requested negotiations. During this period, affected nations will pay reduced tariffs of 10%. (ICE ALMATY)
