VIỆT NAM'S ENERGY TRANSITION PRESENTS CHALLENGES, OFFERS OPPORTUNITIES

Việt Nam's energy transition offers both challenges and opportunities as the country shifts towards a cleaner, more sustainable future. With an estimated 600GW of offshore wind potential—the highest in Southeast Asia—Việt Nam is positioning itself as a regional leader in renewable energy. The revised National Power Development Plan VIII (PDP8), approved in April 2025, prioritizes wind, solar, energy storage, nuclear power, and emerging fuels like green hydrogen and ammonia, while phasing out coal. Key challenges include upgrading the national grid, deploying advanced digital and AI technologies, and ensuring stable energy supply amid rising demand. Digital tools like real-time monitoring and predictive maintenance are essential for improving efficiency and reducing costs. To overcome obstacles, experts recommend increasing investment in renewable energy, expanding energy storage, implementing carbon pricing mechanisms, encouraging international collaboration, and establishing stable, technology-neutral policies. Legal reforms and coordination among government agencies aim to streamline project implementation. Việt Nam also seeks to boost its role in the regional supply chain for offshore wind infrastructure. By fostering innovation and attracting both domestic and foreign investment, Việt Nam aims to ensure energy security, reduce environmental impact, and meet growing demand, laying the groundwork for a resilient and sustainable energy system aligned with global climate goals.
