LẠNG SƠN JOINS UNESCO’S GLOBAL GEOPARKS NETWORK
Lạng Sơn Geopark in northern Việt Nam has been officially recognized as a UNESCO Global Geopark, joining 15 other new sites worldwide. This designation marks Việt Nam’s fourth global geopark, following Đồng Văn, Non Nước Cao Bằng, and Đắk Nông. The recognition, announced during a June 2 ceremony in Paris, highlights the region’s exceptional geological significance, cultural heritage, and natural landscapes. Ambassador Nguyễn Thị Vân Anh emphasized that the status brings new opportunities for sustainable tourism and deeper integration into the Global Geoparks Network. It also supports local economic development through heritage conservation and experience-sharing with other member regions. Antonio De Sousa Abreu, Director of UNESCO’s Division of Ecological and Earth Sciences, noted that the Global Geoparks Programme encourages the balance between conserving natural resources and supporting local communities. He stressed the network’s role in uniting scientists, policymakers, and especially youth, around shared development goals. Kristof Vandenberghe, Chief of UNESCO’s Earth Sciences and Geoparks Section, praised Việt Nam's efforts and encouraged continued commitment to protecting both natural and cultural heritage. The Global Geopark designation, launched in 2015, now includes 229 sites in 50 countries, serving as models for education, conservation, and sustainable development. (ICE HO CHI MINH CITY)
