BANGLADESH CAN EARN $1B A YEAR FROM CARBON MARKET: ANALYSTS

Bangladesh has the potential to generate up to $1 billion annually from the global carbon market, but unclear national policies hinder investment, analysts said at a Dhaka discussion hosted by LightCastle Partners. Since 2006, the country has earned $17 million from projects like improved cooking stoves and solar home systems, highlighting the need for stronger policy direction to realize its full potential. Speakers emphasized Bangladesh's commitment to combating climate change, with targets to produce 16% of energy from renewables by 2030 and reduce annual carbon emissions by 89.47 metric tonnes of CO₂e. Ahmed Zubaer Mahmud from Bangladesh Bank stressed the importance of public-private cooperation and strong banking support. Bijon Islam, CEO of LightCastle, called for innovative financing models to mobilize capital for a low-carbon, inclusive economy. (ICE NEW DELHI)
