INDONESIA PROJECTS US$84 BILLION GDP FROM HEALTH TOURISM

Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin emphasized Indonesia’s untapped potential in health tourism, estimating it could contribute up to US$84 billion to the national GDP—nearly 6% of overall economic growth. Speaking at the 2025 International Conference on Infrastructure, he compared Indonesia's current health spending (US$40 billion annually) to that of Malaysia and projected that, with increased per capita health expenditure and life expectancy, the economic value could double. With Indonesians currently spending around US$10 billion abroad on health services, the Minister called for investment in domestic health tourism infrastructure. Sadikin proposed turning tourist destinations like Labuan Bajo, Bali, and Batam into medical tourism hubs, catering not only to Indonesians but also attracting foreign patients. This, he argued, would keep healthcare spending within the country while boosting economic activity and job creation in the health sector.Source: https://en.antaranews.com/news/359049/indonesia-projects-us84-billion-gdp-from-health-tourism (ICE GIACARTA)
