Romania - Siria

ROMANIAN DAN AIR IS THE FIRST ONLY EU-BASED CARRIER OPERATING COMMERCIAL FLIGHTS TO SYRIA

On June 15, 2025, DAN AIR, a 100% privately owned Romanian airline, officially launched scheduled flights on the Bucharest – Damascus route, becoming the first and only airline in the European Union to operate direct commercial flights to the Syrian capital after a hiatus of several years. The inaugural flight was marked by a special ceremony held at the Official Lounge of “Henri Coandă” International Airport, attended by the Ambassador of Syria to Bucharest and the Syrian Minister of Economy and Industry.  This strategic development stems from bilateral agreements between Romania and Syria, and from DAN AIR’s official designation by the Romanian Ministry of Transport at the end of March 2025, which was subsequently approved by Syrian authorities at the end of April.  “DAN AIR will undoubtedly send a strong signal to Europe that it is acceptable for all countries in the EU to resume commercial ties with Syria. Syria has shown that it can adapt quickly to all the requirements and standards imposed by European authorities for air operations, and that’s how we managed to make these flights possible. DAN AIR will thus be a key player in rebuilding commercial relations between Syria and Romania,” said Matt Ian David, CEO of DAN AIR.  DAN AIR will operate the Bucharest – Damascus route four times a week, using 180-seat Airbus A320 aircraft. The inaugural flight was fully booked, and demand remains high, with a current average load factor of around 75%.  “We carefully analyzed the situation in the region beforehand and decided to operate this flight because many families reached out to us, asking us not to cancel it. For them, it’s a chance to return home after nearly 15 years. As you may know, we’ve always been present in conflict zones and involved in evacuation efforts in other countries in the region. We were the first to arrive and the last to leave.  We would also like to thank the Romanian Civil Aviation Authority for supporting this initiative and the Ministry of Transport, which made these flights possible,” added theCEO of DAN AIR.
