Kazakhstan preparing to sign nuclear energy agreement with China - president (Part 2)Kazakhstan is hoping to sign a nuclear energy partnership agreement with China, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said."Given China's vast experience in nuclear energy, we are interested in developing sustainable cooperation in this strategic area. We will prepare for signing the agreement in the near future," Tokayev said at the Central Asia-China summit in Astana on Tuesday.Central Asia has 20% of the world uranium reserves, over 17% of the world oil reserves, 7% of the world natural gas reserves, and substantial amounts of rare earths, he said."In other words, it would not be an exaggeration to say that the potential for cooperation in this area is huge. We are hoping to intensify the exchange of advanced technologies and to upgrade energy infrastructure," Tokayev said.It is important to bolster regional energy security, technological development and energy diversification, he said.As reported, China National Nuclear Corporation may build a second nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan (Rosatom is due to build the first one). The final decision on building the second nuclear power plant may be made by fall or even earlier, Kazakh First Deputy Prime Minister Roman Sklyar said on Tuesday. (ICE ALMATY)
