Oil production hits 7.7 million tonnes at Kashagan, 4.8 million at Karachaganak in Jan–MayOil production at Kazakhstan’s Kashagan field totaled 7.7 million tonnes in the first five months of 2025, while output at the Karachaganak field reached 4.8 million tonnes, national oil company KazMunayGas said Monday.“At the end of the first five months of 2025, production at Kashagan amounted to about 7.7 million tonnes of oil. The full-year plan for 2025 is 18 million tonnes,” the company said in a press release.Karachaganak produced 4.8 million tonnes of oil over the same period. Full-year output is expected to reach 11.14 million tonnes of oil and 25.57 billion cubic meters of gas, the company said.Kashagan, a giant offshore oil and gas field in Kazakhstan’s sector of the Caspian Sea, is the country’s largest international energy project. Recoverable reserves are estimated at 9 billion to 13 billion barrels of oil. Commercial production began on Nov. 1, 2016.The North Caspian Operating Company (NCOC) shareholders are KMG Kashagan B.V. (16.877%), Shell Kazakhstan Development B.V. (16.807%), Total EP Kazakhstan (16.807%), Agip Caspian Sea B.V. (16.807%), ExxonMobil Kazakhstan Inc. (16.807%), CNPC Kazakhstan B.V. (8.333%), and Inpex North Caspian Sea Ltd. (7.563%).Karachaganak is one of the world’s largest oil and gas fields, with reserves of 1.2 billion tons of oil and 1.35 trillion cubic meters of gas. It is operated under a 40-year production-sharing agreement signed in 1997 by the Karachaganak Petroleum Operating (KPO) consortium, which includes Shell (29.25%) through its affiliate BG Karachaganak Ltd., Eni (29.25%), Chevron (18%), Lukoil (13.5%), and KazMunayGas (10%).
