Kazakhstan concerned over potential logistics disruptions amid Iran tensionsKazakhstan does not expect the situation surrounding Iran to significantly impact its trade relations but remains concerned about potential logistics disruptions, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Economy Serik Zhumangarin said."It’s too early to make any predictions; we are monitoring the current situation. We still hope a peaceful agreement will be reached. We export food products to Iran, and I don’t think the recent developments will affect our exports. People need food, and this country is rather large," Zhumangarin told reporters on the sidelines of the Monday session of the Senate, the upper house of parliament. However, the minister expressed particular concern over logistics, as Kazakhstan has major plans for this sector."The only rail route running to the south goes through Iran [which is a railway from Kazakhstan to Iran through Turkmenistan]. There are no alternative railways, and we wouldn’t want this only route to be affected. We don’t ship large volumes because the Iranian railways are in poor condition, and there are problems with transit railway stations. But we had big plans for this direction and we’ll be monitoring the situation," he said.According to Zhumangarin, trade turnover between Kazakhstan and Iran reached $350 million in 2024, and amounted to around $120 million in the first five months of 2025.
