VIỆT NAM ELECTED CHAIR OF 35TH MEETING OF STATE PARTIES TO UNCLOS

Permanent Deputy Foreign Minister Nguyễn Minh Vũ has been elected Chair of the 35th Meeting of States Parties to the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), taking place in New York from June 23. This marks the first time Việt Nam has held this significant position, reflecting international trust in the country’s role in global ocean governance. The five-day event includes representatives from 170 member states and international organizations. In his remarks, Vũ stressed the importance of multilateral cooperation to address urgent oceanic challenges such as marine pollution, climate change, biodiversity loss, and resource depletion. He urged countries to enhance the implementation of UNCLOS, referred to as the “Constitution for the Oceans,” and to strengthen related institutions to ensure sustainable ocean use and maritime order. UN Legal Affairs Chief Elinor Hammarskjöld reaffirmed UNCLOS’s enduring global relevance. Việt Nam's leadership role is seen as a strong signal of its commitment to ocean sustainability and international law. (ICE HO CHI MINH CITY)
