INDONESIA DELAYS SUGARY DRINK TAX TO 2026

Indonesia has postponed the implementation of its excise tax on sugary packaged beverages (MBDK) to 2026, citing the need for further regulatory readiness and current economic conditions. Initially planned for July 2025, the tax aimed to reduce sugar consumption and address rising health concerns, particularly the growing prevalence of diabetes and other non-communicable diseases. The delay, confirmed by officials from the Finance Ministry and the Directorate General of Customs and Excise, leaves a projected revenue gap of Rp 3.8 trillion, which the government plans to offset through alternative sources such as other excise items and export duties. Despite the postponement, the policy remains a key component of Indonesia’s public health strategy. The MBDK tax was designed to discourage high-sugar products by setting sugar content thresholds, aligning with broader efforts to combat poor dietary habits and physical inactivity. Officials emphasized that while the tax is health-driven, it must be harmonized with macroeconomic priorities, especially amid fiscal pressures and evolving market conditions.Source: https://jakartaglobe.id/business/indonesia-delays-sugary-drink-tax-to-2026 (ICE GIACARTA)
