INDONESIA'S DEFENSE MINISTRY EXPLORES ACQUISITION OF ITALIAN AIRCRAFT CARRIER

Indonesia is considering acquiring the decommissioned Italian light aircraft carrier Giuseppe Garibaldi as part of its naval modernization strategy. Discussions are ongoing at the intergovernmental level, with no formal procurement decision yet made. According to Fincantieri’s Director of Naval Sales, the vessel remains in good condition with 15–20 years of operational life and could be refurbished to meet Indonesian Navy requirements. The carrier’s versatility—supporting drones, helicopters, fixed-wing aircraft, and amphibious operations—makes it a strategic asset. Its humanitarian track record, including disaster relief missions, further enhances its appeal. At the Indodefence 2025 exhibition, Indonesian defense firm REPUBLIKORP showcased a conceptual naval task force model featuring a notional Giuseppe Garibaldi alongside advanced platforms. The event also highlighted Indonesia’s growing interest in unmanned aerial capabilities, with Baykar Technologies confirming a preliminary agreement to supply 60 Bayraktar TB3 drones, including both shipborne and land-based variants. These developments signal Indonesia’s ambition to enhance maritime surveillance and force projection in the Indo-Pacific, potentially becoming the first Southeast Asian nation to operate an aircraft carrier.Source: https://indonesiabusinesspost.com/4580/defense-and-security/defense-ministry-explores-acquisition-of-italian-aircraft-carrier (ICE GIACARTA)
