INDONESIA URGED TO ACT ON US$8 BILLION LOW-CARBON FUEL EXPORT OPPORTUNITY
Indonesia has the potential to generate up to US$ 8 billion annually in low-carbon fuel exports by leveraging its abundant biomass resources and strategic location near the Strait of Malacca. According to Thomas Wagner, head of the Energy Working Group at the European Business Chamber of Commerce (Eurocham), the country should not wait for ideal prices or political conditions, as global demand and regulatory incentives—particularly from the EU, Japan, and South Korea—are already driving strong interest in sustainable fuels such as bio-LNG, biomethanol, biomethane, and sustainable aviation fuel. Indonesia’s palm oil industry alone could yield up to 280 million MMBTU annually, equivalent to 8 million tons of biomethanol or 4–5 million tons of bio-LNG. Although Indonesia is less cost-competitive than countries like Australia for e-ammonia, it holds a logistical edge with existing LNG and methanol infrastructure and proximity to key refueling hubs. The government is encouraged to act quickly to secure international incentives, expand production capacity, and capitalize on recent cross-border agreements—such as those with Singapore—to establish itself as a key player in the global clean energy market. Delay could mean losing ground to regional competitors like Malaysia, which offers similar export potential.Source: https://jakartaglobe.id/business/indonesia-urged-to-act-on-8-billion-lowcarbon-fuel-export-opportunity (ICE GIACARTA)
