INDONESIA TARGETS 2034 FOR FIRST NUCLEAR POWER PLANT
Indonesia is planning to launch its first nuclear power plant by 2034 as part of its long-term strategy to enhance energy security and meet climate commitments. The plant, using small modular reactor (SMR) technology, will have a total capacity of 500 megawatts distributed between Sumatra and Kalimantan. This initiative falls under the 2025–2034 Electricity Supply Work Plan, which targets a 69.5 GW increase in generation capacity from low-emission sources. Several countries, including Russia and Canada, have already expressed interest in participating in the project. The government is also drafting a regulation to enable uranium processing, supported by identified reserves in West Kalimantan. Establishing a licensing system for radioactive mining is part of this framework. Although still pending formal policy and feasibility studies, the project signals a major step toward diversifying Indonesia’s energy mix and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.Source: https://business-indonesia.org/news/indonesia-targets-2034-for-first-nuclear-power-plant-considers-canada-and-russia-as-partners (ICE GIACARTA)
