AFTER NICKEL, INDONESIA’S COPPER SMELTING INDUSTRY IS NOW ATTRACTING INVESTORS
Indonesia is rapidly emerging as a key player in the global copper smelting industry, having attracted over US$9 billion in recent investments to complement its dominant nickel sector. With only four copper smelters compared to more than 50 nickel facilities, the country is expanding capacity through major projects by Freeport Indonesia and Amman Mineral, aiming to produce at least 1.1 million tonnes of copper cathode annually. This growth is driven by surging global demand for copper—especially for EVs, renewable energy, and infrastructure—and supported by Indonesia’s ambitious energy transition plans, including a unified national grid and accelerated renewable power development. Despite ranking 10th in copper reserves, Indonesia’s refined output still lags, highlighting untapped potential and the need for advanced processing capabilities to meet rising domestic and international demand.Source: https://www.straitstimes.com/asia/se-asia/after-nickel-indonesias-copper-smelting-industry-is-now-attracting-investors (ICE GIACARTA)
