NEW LOCAL GOVERNMENT AUTHORITIES UNVEILED IN NATIONWIDE ANNOUNCEMENT

On June 24, 2025, all provinces and cities across Việt Nam held simultaneous ceremonies at 8 a.m. to announce major administrative restructuring under Resolution No. 202/2025/QH15. The events, broadcast live on television, marked the official decisions to merge and reorganise local administrative units to streamline governance structures nationwide. In 23 provinces and cities undergoing mergers, local authorities formally announced the dissolution and consolidation of district- and commune-level units. New Party Committees were established, and leadership appointments were made in line with decisions from central and local governments. Meanwhile, in the 11 provinces and cities unaffected by mergers, local bodies announced the relevant National Assembly (NA) resolutions. The Party Central Committee’s Organisation Commission is overseeing appointments for the 2020–2025 term, including Party secretaries, executive committees, and inspection bodies. All appointments must be finalised by September 15, 2025. Under the new structure, Việt Nam will have 34 provinces and centrally-run cities, including 28 provinces and 6 cities. New local governments must be fully operational by July 1. Until then, current authorities will continue to function to ensure governance continuity and public service delivery. The Prime Minister and NA Standing Committee will appoint leaders of People’s Committees and Councils, respectively. (ICE HO CHI MINH CITY)
