JCD BEGAN IMPLEMENTING NEW TAX CUTS ON VEHICLES-DIRECTOR

-Jordan Customs Department (JCD) embarked on implementing the Cabinet's decision on Sunday to lower the special tax rate on vehicles of all categories, as per the announced lists. The step comes as part of measures to enhance tax justice, streamline procedures, and stimulate investment in the sustainable transport sector. In remarks to "Petra" Sunday, JCD Director General, Maj. Gen. Ahmad Akalik, said the new system reflects a "strategic" reform approach and contributes to eliminating previous distortions that affected tax and fee calculation.Akalik noted the Cabinet's move removed the overlap between the general and special taxes and introduced unified rates based on the customs value of the vehicle.Akalik said the previous tax system was based on multiple levies, which caused "significant" variations in tax rates, trigerring confusion among importers and impacting accuracy of customs revenues.Akalik added that the new system unifies rates and simplifies fees, enabling the "accurate and transparent" mechanism to set the tax due for each vehicle category.Regarding electric vehicles, Akalik stated the previous system featured 3 different tax brackets, while rates are now unified to facilitate import operations and support the government's drive to promote use of environmentally friendly vehicles.Noting all customs data will be processed based on the new system, he stressed that procedures have become "clearer" at the levy and specification level, which provides "relief to traders and reduces the margin of misinterpretation."The decision, he stated, is an "important strategic" step in reforming customs and tax policies, which aligns with the government's efforts to stimulate the economy, support transition to clean energy, and facilitate trade and import flow, which would "positively" impact citizens and the national economy.
