FACTORY output growth, both in terms of volume and in value, picked up in May as food manufacturing accelerated, the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) reported on Tuesday. The volume of production (VoPI) and value of production (VaPI) indices rose by 4.9 percent and 4.5 percent, respectively, from the 4.3 percent recorded by both in April. The expansion was also faster than the 4.2 for VoPI and 3.3 percent for VaPI that was recorded a year earlier. Both the value and volume of production growth remained positive year to date at 2.3 percent and 1.8 percent, respectively. The PSA said that the manufacture of food products, which saw growth rise to 16.4 percent from 11.9 percent in April, was the primary driver of to the VaPI gain.
