Kazakhstan prepares for talks with the US to protect national interests – Trade MinistryKazakhstan has submitted proposals to the White House aimed at improving mutual trade conditions and is preparing for negotiations, the country’s Ministry of Trade and Integration announced.According to the ministry’s press service, Astana received an official notice from the U.S. president on July 7, 2025, regarding new import tariffs set to take effect August 1, 2025, affecting several countries, including Kazakhstan. A flat 25% duty will apply to all Kazakh exports to the U.S."However, the majority of Kazakhstan’s exports will remain exempt from the new tariffs, covering key raw and strategic materials such as oil, uranium, silver, ferroalloys, tantalum, and titanium. The ministry estimates that the measures will not impact approximately 95% of Kazakh exports to the U.S.," the Ministry said.In an effort to maintain predictable trade conditions for Kazakh goods, the government has sent the U.S. administration specific proposals and initiatives to enhance bilateral trade."Kazakhstan’s goal is to reach mutually agreed solutions on market access and trade terms," the statement said. "The U.S. side is currently reviewing the proposals and will inform [Kazakhstan] of the negotiation date. Kazakhstan is preparing for further talks with the U.S. to protect its national interests and foster sustainable trade and economic partnership."Trade between Kazakhstan and the U.S. reached $4.2 billion in 2024, a 4% increase from the previous year ($4.1 billion). Major Kazakh exports to the U.S. included crude oil ($1.1 billion, 56.2% of total exports), uranium ($322.9 million, 16.4%), silver ($239.9 million, 12.2%), ferroalloys ($188.2 million, 9.5%), and tantalum and related products ($17.6 million, 0.89%).From January to May 2025, bilateral trade totaled $1.265 billion, with Kazakh exports to the U.S. amounting to $418.2 million.
